NBA legend Stephen Curry has become the latest champion to dabble in non-fungible tokens (NFTs). After breaking the NBA's all-time three-point record, Curry is set to release wearable virtual reality sneakers.
Curry will release these wearables in partnership with sports apparel maker Under Armour, a partnership that will create the world’s first cross-platform virtual reality sports world with in-game functionality.
Stephen Curry Releases NFT to Celebrate Milestone
Curry is releasing the NFT in celebration of one of his most important wins. Last week, the Golden State Warriors point guard broke the NBA record for three-pointers made in history, making 2,974 three-pointers in his career.
To commemorate this achievement, Under Armour announced the release of 2,974 NFTs, named the "Genesis Curry Flow" series. These NFTs will be inspired by the shoes Curry wore on the day he broke the record.
The NFT is interoperable and can be worn by users in three gaming virtual worlds: Decentraland, Gala Games, and The Sandbox, which are the leading VR sports worlds on the market.
The sneakers are valued at $333 per pair, another sign of its achievement, and Under Armour noted that proceeds from the sale will be donated to charities that ensure young people have access to sports.
Curry will also use Curry Brand profits to build three new basketball arenas in Charlotte, New York City, and Oakland. The NFT release was supported by the creative agency Berlin Cameron.
Ewen Cameron, founder of Berlin Cameron, commented: "Given Stephen's achievements, we wanted to do something that truly 'changed the VR game', so we created the first sneaker that can travel across platforms and has real functionality and performance."
NBA and NFTs
The NBA is one of the sports leagues that has been deeply involved in NFTs and the entire crypto space. In addition to Curry, other NBA stars who have publicly supported NFTs include Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers and Josh Hart of the New Orleans Pelicans.
The NBA’s NFT space has received a major boost from NBA Top Shot. This is a project developed by Dapper Lab that allows fans to sell special and rare basketball moments. NBA Top Shot has seen significant growth over the past few years and now ranks as one of the leading NFT platforms in terms of sales and transaction volume.
The entire sports industry is also getting deeper into the crypto space. Football teams have also shown interest in selling fan moments. The Socios platform in the football sports sector allows teams to sell fan tokens to increase engagement. Socios also allows teams to launch NFTs. A few months ago, AC Milan launched NFTs on Socios.
