The Maharashtra State Skill Development Board (MSBSD) has issued over 100,000 verifiable virtual graduation certificates to graduates. The MSBSD developed the virtual certificates on the Polygon blockchain using the LegitDoc platform.
According to Neil Martis, co-founder of LegitDoc, virtual certificates cannot be tampered with because they are recorded on the blockchain. Through the Polygon blockchain, these certificates can also be verified to confirm their authenticity, Martis added. The virtual certificate initiative is a collaborative effort between MSBSD and the Maharashtra State Innovation Society (MSINS).
Mattis described the innovation as a game-changer. He revealed that it brings a new era of data security, privacy, transparency and cost reduction. For MSBSD, this is the first time that the board has issued virtual certificates to students. Mattis spoke highly of the board and expressed his excitement. He said that MSBSD refused to adopt traditional virtual certificates and adopted on-chain virtual certificates.
Mattis described the rigorous process that the commission usually goes through when issuing paper certificates. He said the process usually takes time and the efforts of many people. In addition, the verification of the certificates is also time-consuming. He pointed out that it usually takes the attendance of three commission officials and about a month for verification. The co-founder said such a process does not guarantee that the certificate is correct.
He believes that this move effectively speeds up the issuance and verification of certificates. Mathis asserted that the use of blockchain technology will reduce manual input and prevent errors.
Furthermore, Mattis explained the decision to use the Polygon blockchain. He recalled that the government once used the Ethereum blockchain for a similar project. According to him, the inherent scalability and huge gas fees of Ethereum made the committee turn to Polygon.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra has been a significant adopter of blockchain technology. Recall that Maharashtra also invented Covid 19 and the issuance of caste certificates. Mithun John, co-CEO of MSINS, reflected on this development. John revealed that Maharashtra had previously used blockchain with notable success in some projects. The decision to make MSBSD’s graduation certificates virtual was based on this record.
The latest developments highlight that blockchain is gaining the deserved recognition in various industries. After the impact of blockchain has been felt in industries like finance, banking, medicine, sports, entertainment, public health, etc., this innovation is gaining the pinnacle of global recognition. Reports of blockchain adoption are constantly being heard around the world.
In 2021, the blockchain market size reached US$4.9 billion, and there are strong indications that the market size will reach US$67 billion by 2026, with a CAGR of 68.4% due to the increasing adoption of blockchain by private and government projects in different fields.
