Axie Infinity has been the most popular metaverse game for several months, but according to the latest game statistics from a website called Activeplayer, things seem to be changing. The project recently hit its lowest number of active monthly players in a year and a half, and is now back to the level of January 2021.
The project reached its peak around January 2022, when it had 2.78 million active players a month. However, as the year progressed, the number of monthly active players declined, falling to 1.2 million as of June this year. Now, that number has dropped to 701,447.
What is the reason for Axie losing players?
There are several potential factors as to why Axie Infinity is in its current state. Obviously, the crypto industry has been suffering from a massive price drop since cryptocurrency prices began to plummet in November 2021. However, this is not the only reason, as the game mechanics are also believed to have played a role in players losing interest.
Especially when it comes to how much players can earn from this play-to-earn game. The Play-To-Earn (P2E) model is one of the biggest reasons that attract people to blockchain games at the moment, and this time last year, players in many developed countries were earning a lot of money, often above the minimum wage in some countries.
However, the price decline that dominated 2022 caused the price of Axie's game reward token Smooth Love Potion to drop by more than 95%. At the same time, the circulating supply fell from 2.4 billion to about 40 billion in the same period. The reason for this is that a large number of new players saw the opportunity to make easy money by playing games. The increase in supply, coupled with the drop in price, made the token even less valuable.
Axie’s NFTs also saw a drop
November 2021 was a month when crypto prices plummeted, but it was also when the Axie NFT market saw 2 million tokens being bought and sold. In total, that was about 140,956.7 Ether, valued at $6.395 million at the time.
Of course, these numbers have also dropped. Right now, Axie is seeing around 311,300 Axies sold, worth $5.37 million right now, or 4,143 Ether in the past month. Of course, Axie Infinity isn’t the only project to be so negatively impacted by NFTs. This drop is in line with the general drop in the NFT industry.
